Honeyland
Honeyland | 87mins | Turkish with English Subtitles
A real-life story told halfway across the world carries a universal message, a tale of stewardship v greed, of old and new, and of, well, honey.
In the remote mountains of Macedonia, Hatidze takes care of her 85-year-old mother, the small house the two of them share, and a bee colony. She adheres to traditional beekeeping, taking half the honey for her to sell for her mother's care and leaving half for the bees. Her life isn't glamorous, but she is content. Her peace is soon challenged by a family moving in next door with seven children. Initially fond and welcoming of the family, even teaching them about how she tends the bees, tensions arise after they disregard her environmentally-minded beekeeping advice in favor of making a quick buck.
Gorgeous and moving, Honeyland is one of the highest-praised documentaries out there today.
