An unforgettable late-’60s counterculture masterpiece, Robert Downey Sr.’s Putney Swope remains a vital provocation on race, pop culture and America.

New 50th Anniversary restoration by The Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation - with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation! The most popular film by Robert Downey Sr. is this offbeat classic about the antics that ensue when Putney Swope (Arnold Johnson, his voice dubbed by a gravelly Downey), the only African-American executive at his advertising firm, is unexpectedly elected its president and turns the industry on its ear through a series of outrageous, taboo-busting TV commercials (strewn throughout the film like comedic landmines.) Putney summarily fires the wealthy white executives, replaces them with Black Power apostles, renames the company Truth and Soul, Inc., and proceeds to wreak politically incorrect havoc. (USA, 1969, 84 Mins, R, English | Dir. Robert Downey Sr.)
