Description

Saturday January 17 at 7:00 pm  |  $12 in advance, $15 day of show

On Jan 17, Bill Plympton will introduce an evening of short films made by the artist who inspired him to become a filmmaker. Homer Groening entered the world of advertising in Portland, and opened his own ad agency here in 1958. Famous for writing, directing and producing his own work, he made award winning commercials, industrial films, public service announcements, and educational films. He also made experimental short films seen in film festivals around the world.

Films in the program will be provided by the Groening family. This is the first retrospective to honor the life and work of this influential Portlander.

Lisa Groening will moderate the panel discussion following the films. Panelists are Tom Shrader, a professional colleague of Homer Groening; Ted Mahar, a friend of Homer Groening; and Bill Plympton, who sought Homer Groening’s advice after seeing his work in a PSU film festival as an undergraduate. Plympton’s seventh full length, entirely hand drawn, animated feature, CHEATIN’, is expected by many to secure his third Oscar nomination in 2015.
