“What’s that SMELL?”
“Hulkamania” was at its height in the late-80s to early-90s, with wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan dominating the World Wrestling Federation as its most heroic (and most marketable) figure. A movie starring the Hulkster was no
surprise, but what audiences got in 1989’s NO HOLDS BARRED probably couldn’t have been predicted.
Hulk stars as Rip Thomas, the WWF Heavyweight Champion (sound familiar?) wanted by the competing World Television Network and its head executive, the textbook-sleazy Brell. Brell’s offer starts off with a simple bribe and Rip literally makes him eat his offer. After that, no holds are uh, barred, as Brell sends his goons after Rip and they’re quickly dispatched in a ridiculous fight scene that ends with the film’s most infamous gag.
Brell decides the only way to take Rip down is by finding a bigger and badder dude out there to take him on, so he starts a series of insane televised bouts called “Battle of the Tough Guys” with a $100K prize. Plenty of mega-tough meatheads show up, but none more menacing than Zeus (Tiny Lister), whose signature moves are kicking down walls, putting innocent people in wheelchairs, and screaming a lot. Now Rip’s got no choice but to protect his family, his girlfriend (oh yeah, he clumsily falls in love along the way) and take down Zeus along with an entire television network! NO HOLDS BARRED is absolutely a movie made for teenage boys, with some of the most ridiculous jokes covering a middle-school kid’s favorite subjects: wieners, poop, and wieners. Fortunately, witnessing Hulk Hogan pummel people into limos, attempt to emote and generally carry the movie as it grows increasingly insane is quality entertainment no matter what your age!
