Description

Friday, February 6 at 6:00pm and 9:00pm  |  FREE ADMISSION!  | With director Biyi Bandele in attendance!  |  Presented by the Cascade Festival of African Films.

The Cascade Festival of African Films opens its 25th annual festival with two screenings of Biyi Bandele's HALF OF A YELLOW SUN, both free and open to the public, and post-film Q&A with the director.

Based on the award-winning novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, HALF OF A YELLOW SUN (2013) balances deep personal drama against a broad canvas of national upheaval. Beginning with Nigeria’s independence in 1960, the film centers on twin sisters from a prominent Lagos family who make very different life choices. Olanna (Thandie Newton) chooses to live with her lover, the “revolutionary professor” Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in the dusty university town of Nsukka, while Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) becomes a successful businesswoman and falls in love with an English writer. Ethnic tensions erupt into civil war, forcing Olanna and Odenigbo to flee to the ill-fated breakaway republic of Biafra, and then Kainene goes missing.

In English. Rated R for some violence and sexual content.
