Description

Saturday, May 30 at 12:30pm  |  $10  |

Featuring Kate Nash, Bree McKenna of Tacocat, Bitch's Sarah Mirk, and She Shred's Fabi Reyna

She Shreds magazine will be presenting a panel that discusses the trajectory and progression of feminism in the music industry, what being coined a "woman guitarist" or "all-girl band" means, and asking a panel of women to discuss what being a woman means to them as those experiences continue to evolve. How is the current shift in feminism affecting women in the music industry? What kind of change are we looking for and how can we help see it through?

Featuring:

Kate Nash (musician and founder of Girl Gang TV)
Kate Nash is a multi-instrumental recording artist from London. With a platinum selling album and a BRIT Award tucked firmly under her belt, Kate is known across both the music and fashion industries as a forthright songwriter, unabashed feminist, and front row style icon. In the wake of Kate’s second album My Best Friend Is You, Kate set about using her influence to shift gender perceptions and inspire a new generation of female musicians, writers, producers, and technicians, launching the Rock 'N' Roll for Girls After School Music Club. She also worked with young self-harming women at The Wish Centre in Harrow. Kate was also recently appointed Global Ambassador of the Because I am a Girl initiative by Plan USA, charged with empowering women and girls in developing countries.

Sarah Mirk (online editor at Bitch Media)
Sarah Mirk is a journalist and editor interested in sexual politics, gender, and media. Sarah worked for five years as a reporter and columnist for weekly newspapers The Stranger and The Portland Mercury and is now the online editor at Bitch Media and the host of Bitch Media's weekly feminism and pop culture podcasts. At Bitch, she works with about 150 writers a year to publish their work, including coverage of band, music industry news, and a feminist mixtape every Friday.

Fabi Reyna (founder and editor-in-chief at She Shreds magazine)
Fabi Reyna is an editor, event coordinator, entrepreneur, and guitar player. Born in Mexico, raised in Texas, and currently residing in Portland, Reyna found what would become her career and passion as a 13-year-old camper at Portland’s Rock ’N’ Roll Camp For Girls. At the age of 15, she began organizing events during Austin’s SXSW and now at 23 founded and runs She Shreds magazine—the world's only print publication dedicated to women guitarists and bassists.

What is She Shreds?
She Shreds magazine is the world's only print publication dedicated to women guitarists and bassists. We strive to change the way women guitarists and bassists are depicted and represented in the music industry and popular culture by creating a platform where people can listen, see, and experience what it means to be a woman who shreds. Our goal is to transcend boundaries like gender and genre—supporting radicalism, respect and revolution.
