Description

Co-Sponsored by Susan and Russell Holdstein and by Bob Tandler and Valli Benesch.

Shtisel is a family melodrama that looks like Modern Family put on a kippah and went to Jerusalem. This television melodrama returns to the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (Season 1, SFJFF 2014) for its second season after another year of success in Israel. The show, which combines Haredi traditions and popular television tropes, has been a critical and commercial success with the most secular as well as the most devout of audiences. Season 2 once again follows Shulem, his son Akiva and the Shtisel clan as they navigate adolescence, engagement, sibling ties and the culture of death and dying. Not to mention good old forbidden romance! Much like the broad range of ages in the show, Shtisel appeals to anyone who is a fan of love, be it for romantic, religious or family reasons. This show is a sneak peek behind the curtain in the shul bringing the Orthodox to the secular and popular culture to those under the tzitzit. After earning numerous Israeli Academy of Film and Television awards for its first season, Shtisel’s second season is primed to wow again, bringing another dose of drama, sarcastic humor and a loving family of a different sort to screens of all denominations. —Maya Lekach
