I WANNA BE A DANCING MAN: FRED ASTAIRE SOLO

Monday, December 11 at 7:30pm

$11 Members | $16 Public

Film Historian Philip Harwood takes us on a musical  journey, as we experience the solo dance numbers of Fred Astaire. Fred Astaire is the dancin’ man!

Fred Astaire danced with many beautiful and talented partners. But, when he danced alone, it was poetry in motion.  Astaire always rehearsed for long periods of time, for each of his films. His solo dance numbers are considered highlights. Each solo number tells a story.  He also had a certain talent dancing while using props: drums (ie. A Damsel In Distress) ,  fireworks (Holiday Inn), multiple images of himself (Swing Time, Blue Skies), disembodied shoes (The Barkleys of Broadway) and even on the ceiling (Royal Wedding).

Film Historian Philip Harwood is an Adjunct Film Professor at St. Francis College, and Adjunct Lecturer in the Hutton House Lectures at LIU Post.  He teaches film studies at the 92nd Street Y, JCC Manhattan, and United Federation of Teachers Retiree Program. He is also a published author, and a New York State Librarian.
