Luca and Gustav’s story may have started with an eviction letter, but the title leaves no room for doubt. The country many call il Bel Paese for its unique artistic and natural heritage is today a place of many contradictions. Besides the financial crisis, Italy is undergoing a veritable cultural meltdown. Like many of their friends, the duo consider moving abroad in search of new opportunities. Before making the big leap, however, they decide to embark on a farewell road trip in a vintage Fiat 500 to explore some of the country’s most iconic people and places. With fanciful animation and an ever-changing array of colorful cars, they paint a heartfelt portrait of contemporary Italy devoid of clichés. This delightful documentary, Best Feature and Audience Award–winner at the Milano Film Festival, triumphs with its genuine depiction of a place many love yet so many leave.
