In Matteo Garrone’s crowd-pleasing follow-up to Gomorrah, fishmonger Luciano hopes to emulate fellow Napolitano Enzo and achieve fame throughout Italy by being on , his country’s version of Big Brother. Luciano enjoys la dolce vita in Naples with a large, loving family and a respectable business (aided by a little repo-scam sideline) that keeps them comfortable even in tough times. A hero to his wife and children, wannabe big fish Luciano nevertheless yearns for recognition outside of his small pond, so what else to do but become a reality TV star? Unexpectedly passing the program’s local audition, he takes his family to Rome in order to compete in the national round against a garish array of contestants at the legendary Cinecitta´ studios. Confident he’ll be chosen, Luciano awaits the call back in Naples, but doubt and paranoia set in as our hapless hero fears he’s not “real” enough for reality TV. Garrone’s film, a big hit at Cannes, pokes fun at Italian culture and the modern-day hunger for fame with humor and pathos.
