An overwhelmed teacher, an administrator and a counselor at a San Francisco middle school all turn to mindfulness training to help troubled students find the focus, self-reflection and inner calm they need to study and learn. Will they be saved by the meditation bell? Marina Middle School suffers from a systemic divide: While its honor students soar, its general education students—mostly poor African American, Latino and Asian youth—are mired in chaotic, overcrowded classrooms with a severe lack of self-discipline and mutual respect. Indeed, the school holds the record for behavioral problems. Determined to turn things around, Marina brings in Mindful Schools, a meditation-training program. A young meditation teacher introduces ancient tools of conscious breathing and reflection to create a space fit for learning. Over time, mindfulness takes root with surprising results.
