Growing up in 1970s Belfast, young Collette McVeigh witnesses violence and discord firsthand when she sends her younger brother on an errand only to see his limp, lifeless body carried home after he gets caught in the crossfire. After 20 years, Collette (brilliantly played by Andrea Riseborough) is a young mother and an active IRA member in a family of radical nationalists. Following an attempted bombing in the London subway, MI5 agent Mac (Clive Owen) gives Collette an ultimatum: work undercover or go to prison hundreds of miles from her son. While Collette struggles with her decision to turn informant, Mac feels protective of her and apprehensive toward his handler (Gillian Anderson) who seems to have her own suspect agenda. Director James Marsh (of the Academy Award®–winner Man on Wire) crafts a fresh, slow-burning thriller in which Riseborough proves a revelation as a woman navigating a labyrinth of betrayals and allegiances.
