Directed by David O. Russell

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Julia Stiles, Chris Tucker

Produced by: Donna Gigliotti, Bruce Cohen, Jonathan Gordon

David O. Russell’s joyously bent follow-up to his Oscar®-winning drama The Fighter finds him returning to the rich territory of his oddball roots (Spanking the Monkey, I Heart Huckabees, MVFF 2004). Bradley Cooper is Pat Solitano, a bipolar Philadelphian who moves back in with his parents (Robert DeNiro and Jacki Weaver) after spending time in an institution for a violent assault. It’s not exactly the dream premise for a comedy, but Russell is a master at infusing dark subject matter with an organic levitymuch like his main character, who despite serious anger issues makes a concerted effort to look on the bright side of life. Pat’s situation gets more complicated, though, when he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a seriously troubled woman and obviously kindred spirit. With a pitch-perfect blend of humor and pathos, and featuring a slew of inspired performances, Silver Linings Playbook deals with issues of mental illness, family dysfunction and loss with the deft touch only a true filmmaking virtuoso can provide.
