FOCUS: LATIN AMERICA • In Dominga Sotomayor’s international prize–winning directorial debut, ten-year-old Lucia embarks on a road trip up the west coast of South America with her family, experiencing the wonderment and sad awakenings of young adulthood in equal measure. As Lucia and her younger brother play in the back seat, a front-seat drama quietly plays out around the impending dissolution of their parents’ marriage, even as mom and dad try their best to connect with their offspring on what will clearly be a final family outing. Highlighted by the ruggedly exquisite Chilean landscape and unfolding with understated poetry that recalls the quietly powerful films of both Michelangelo Antonioni and Abbas Kiarostami (see Like Someone In Love), Thursday Till Sunday offers near-documentary intimacy in its sensitive depiction of the familial ties that bind, its story and characters ringing true at every twist and turn of the road.
