Deep in the heart of Ireland, a rookie crook collides with a mysterious foreigner in this lively caper-comedy from multi-award–winning filmmaker Terry George (MVFF 2007 Tributee). Known for more intense subject matter (In the Name of the Father, Hotel Rwanda, Some Mother’s Son), writer-director George gets downright giddy in this quick-witted romp starring Brendan Fraser as Joe McGuire, an affable American “refugee” in Belfast working at his cousin’s antique store. Martin McCann is Jimbo, a down-on-his-luck young father who owes a sleazy local crime boss big money. After desperate Jimbo takes confused Joe hostage, the stakes rise to startling levels as the chaotic criminal activity at a local fish market catches the attention of the nation’s top leaders. With fast-paced repartee and a cadre of colorful characters, including Colm Meaney as the flustered head detective, this sly comedy expertly mixes biting social commentary with subtle slapstick to create a smart, droll good time with a bit of a brogue.
