Description

Groundbreaker, truth teller and political progressive in the guise of a toothless, housecoat-wearing comedienne with a raspy voice, Jackie “Moms” Mabley was a Chitlin’ Circuit staple who delivered risqué antics and controversial social commentary through clever wordsmithing. From her onscreen persona to her lesser-known off-screen life as Mr. Moms—a powerful queer figure in men’s clothes—Mabley set the trajectory for both black and non-black comics. She was the first black woman to work the Apollo Theater and Carnegie Hall, and she split top billing with the likes of Cab Calloway during a career that spanned five decades. Whoopi Goldberg, who first honored Mabley onstage in her 1984 show Moms, revisits Mabley now in her directorial debut. Amid archival footage, photography and animation. Goldberg interviews comedic legends like Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Stiller and Joan Rivers about Mabley’s impact on their work and her indelible contributions to the comedic landscape.
