Description

The Intersection of Art, Design, Advocacy and Environment: An Evening with John Grade

Presented in partnership with The Design Museum and Design Week Film

Award-winning sculptor and conceptual artist John Grade will present his latest work as part of the Artists in the Arctic residency program. The program highlights Alaska’s place in the Arctic as a way to connect globally. Grade is representing North America and is spending time alone in the Alaskan wilderness equipped with his supplies and an HD video camera.

Grade is best-known for his large-scale, outdoor sculptures and installations. He has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Seattle Art Museum; Gynthia-Reeves Gallery, New York; and Fabrica, Brighton, England. He is also the winner of the 2011 Contemporary Northwest Art Awards Arlene Schnitzer Prize.

Following a presentation of his previous work, Grade will present video highlights of his latest work. After the screening, Grade and David Laubenthal, Launch Director of the Design Museum Portland, will discuss the influence of art on technology and vice-versa, and the overlaps of design in his art work and process. This will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

About Design Museum Portland: Launched this past year in 2013, Design Museum Portland is focused on helping to educate the public on the importance and role of good design in their lives. We put on our exhibitions, events and education workshops throughout the community. In doing so we turn the whole city into the museum. What started in Boston almost five years ago now lives here in Portland as well. We’re thrilled to be a part of Design Week Portland!
