Description

Join us to celebrate the delicious filmmaking of award-winning documentarian Les Blank. In celebration of what would have been his 79th birthday, Janus Films/The Criterion Collection and film curator Greg Hamilton are hosting a special evening devoted to one of Les’ favorite subjects: FOOD.  Come enjoy an delicious evening of garlic and cajun/creole cuisine with these brand new digital restorations from the original 16mm prints.

On the menu for this evening are two of Les Blank’s best known features on the subject:

Garlic is as Good as Ten Mothers (1980 – 51 minutes): A zesty paean of praise to the greater glories of garlic. This lip-smacking foray into the history, consumption, cultivation and culinary/curative powers of the stinking rose features chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse, Werner Herzog, and a flavorful musical soundtrack.

Yum, Yum, Yum: A Taste of Cajun and Creole Cooking (1990 – 31 minutes): Les Blank marries his passion for spicy, down home food and his love for Cajuns and Creoles in this mouth-watering, exploration of the cooking and other enthusiasms of French-speaking Louisiana. Features tangy music, Marc Savoy, Paul Prudhomme, and other great cooks.

In keeping with one of Les' traditions, there will be two pots of homemade jambalaya available to eat (for a donation) during the screening.
