Description

Oregon Nikkei Endowment is proud to present the Portland debut of Hidden Legacy: Japanese Traditional Arts in the World War II Internment Camps. Through historical footage and interviews with artists, this documentary film tells the story of how traditional Japanese cultural arts were maintained at a time when over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, over two-thirds of whom were American citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes on the West Coast and incarcerated in America’s internment camps. For this one-day-only event, the screen and stage will come alive with a concert by master koto player Shirley Kazuyo Muramato-Wong and a Japanese classical dance performance by the Sahomi Tachibana Dancers. Attendees will be also able to participate in a question and answer session with the filmmaker and artists. All proceeds will go directly to support programs at the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, a Japanese American history museum located in Old Town/Chinatown.
