“Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power…”

There are 90’s films, and there are films that could not have been made in any other decade. THE CRAFT is a brilliant example of a 90’s time capsule – sanitized goth culture meets the supernatural meets an alt-rock soundtrack, and the result is a film that’s the mall-witch answer to 1995’s HACKERS.

Robin Tunney stars as Sarah Bailey, new to town and trying to settle into a WASP-y Catholic school. School sucks, of course, but Sarah’s got a troubled past and some strange abilities that are hard to hide. Soon enough, she’s noticed by a group of girls that don’t fit in with the rest of the class, or most of the world for that matter – they’re practicing witches looking for “a fourth” to complete their coven and realize the next level of their combined abilities. What begins as the sort of thing you might jokingly try at a slumber party reaches a surprising reality as their spells actually work and their fortune begins to change. Tapping into the ether is risky and addictive, though, and the coven starts to splinter as they become more powerful. Can Sarah make it to graduation, or will the fabric of her reality be torn apart by her own circle?

THE CRAFT is a rare Hollywood film in that it features strong female leads and great performances and is obviously targeted towards women without being a romantic comedy or totally superficial – the concept is played pretty seriously if fairly melodramatically, and it’s got an edge that’s typically reserved for stories where women are being menaced or hunted by dangerous men. Of course, it’s plenty cheesy, too – and like HACKERS and other products of its time, you can absolutely love it and find it hilariously absurd. Come heckle this very special film, but be careful – you might end up on the wrong side of an incantation…
