#feelings

It’s not you, but it’s not me, either. It’s these stupid #feelings. Let’s face it, modern love is weird. It’s confusing and scary and who was that guy who “liked” your new profile picture, anyway? But it’s also warm and fulfilling and annoying for everybody else but I don’t care because I really, really like you. Love is in the air, or at least it was until you walked in. So what’ll it be, will you marry me? Because it’s legal here, now. Meet me at the shorts screening and we’ll run away together. -JW

ALL FIGURED OUT

IndieFest turns 16 this year, and like any good adolescent, we know we’ve got everything all figured out. Or at least we would, if only she’d pay attention to us. If only they’d come to our party. If only they’d let us meet our real mother. If only we weren’t stuck here in this Podunk town. Ugh, just stop asking us questions and watch for yourself. I hate you!!! -JW

This program features the best of new animation from around the world, with a wide range of styles from 8-bit cartoon to celluloid manipulation to rotoscoping the invisible. See humans learn to communicate at the dawn of time, an overture brought to life in inky black and white, and a man get his first (of many) colonoscopies, all rendered one frame at a time. -JW

BABY BLUES

Polish director Katarzyna Roslaniec follows her controversial, irresistibly scrappy debut Mall Girls with this edgy and disarmingly frank look at teen pregnancy. “Unlike many films about teenage mothers, Baby Blues is anything but a piece of gloomy social realism. Instead, it is an exhilarating ride through a garishly coloured world of clothes, sex and drugs and a ribald look at Poland's fledgling capitalism.” (Berlin IFF) Plays with "Mai" (16mins). -KJ

BIG LEBOWSKI party+film

Way out west there was this fella... fella I wanna tell you about. Fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. Mr. Lebowski, he called himself “The Dude.” Now, "Dude" - that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense. And a lot about where he lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place so darned interestin'.

11th annual Big Lebowski party kicks off at 8p at 518 Valencia with Lebowski-related entertainments and (of course) white russians followed by a costume contest and 35mm screening of the Coen Brothers' classic on the Roxie screen at midnight. The party is 21up, the midnight screening is all ages.

Blue Ruin

Murder Party’s Jeremy Saulnier returns to the director’s chair after a six-year absence to bring us this Cannes-winning tale of rural revenge. Macon Blair stars as Dwight, a beach hobo still shell shocked from the murder of his parents years ago. When he hears that the man accused of killing them is being released from prison, Dwight heads back to his old haunts to give the killer a blood-soaked homecoming. “Blue Ruin may occasionally be midnight-movie lurid, but not at the expense of deeper questions about vengeance’s diminishing returns.” (Tim Grierson, Paste Magazine) -KJ

DOOMSDAYS

Dirty Fred and Bruho live an itinerant life, breaking in to vacation homes in the Catskills and enjoying what pleasures they find, convinced that the world is on a collision course with disaster due to dwindling petroleum supplies. “Billed as a 'pre-apocalyptic comedy' and evocative of early Jarmusch, Linklater, Hellman and Varda, Doomsdays is one of the most profoundly counter-culture films you will ever see.” -Mitch Davis, Fantasia Film Festival - AF
