Never Silent! Volume 2"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)"
San Francisco experimental techno artist, Its Own Infinite Flower, will perform a live electronic score to Robert Wiene's 1920 Silent Expressionist Horror Classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. While taking inspiration from the iconic synthesizer soundtracks of John Carpenter (The Fog, Halloween 1, 2, & 3) and the influential work of Tangerine Dream (Firestarter, The Keep), it will not be a “retro” score. The music will attempt to fuse the 20th century classical music that informed the classic horror soundtrack with a modern approach to synthesis and electronics, and to not aschew the cliches of the horror soundtrack entirely, but instead subvert them playfully, celebrating it's rich sonic legacy. Old will meet new for this one night only performance to accompany a true cinematic masterpiece that Roger Ebert called “the first true horror film.”

Nina Forever - Opening Night Film
Some films are just plain odd. Nina Forever is one such film, and not just because of its storyline, but also because it uses a genre to explore other genres. Dead girlfriends returning from the dead may usually be ascribed to horror, but here it’s used to focus on drama and romance, as well as exploring themes of grief and moving on. In that respect, this is a unique and intelligent film that should appeal to lovers of the strange and peculiar.

Reveries of a Solitary Walker aka Fantasticherie di un passeggiatore solitario
In another, told in claymation, a boy and an old man enact Rousseau’s fairytale walks through the woods. And in a third, Svankmajer-esque episode, Rousseau (Luca Lionello) himself battles the green fairy of absinthe and the ghost of his wife as he tries to confront his demons – or at least a demon – through finishing his writings. Tonally, the film is all over the place, and overplays its own quirkiness to often irritating effect – but as a showcase for Gaudio’s mastery of different cinematic forms, it’s an impressive calling card. It also, appropriately enough, comes with a good ending.

Sacred Blood with Christopher Coppola in attendance for Q&A
Christopher Coppola in attendance for Q&A
This visually imaginative, over-the-top (intentionally so) vampire flick is a love letter of sorts to the darker side of San Francisco. There are no cable cars or crooked streets or postcard-pretty images here. Director Christopher Coppola takes us to some familiar places, yet they somehow seem so unfamiliar — empty and brooding and sinister. The effect is deliriously strange. But there’s another revelation here, too: Coppola’s son, Bailey (who plays vampire Natia’s love interest, Luke), is someone to watch. The kid has it. By David Lewis SF Chronicle
