Late one night, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is led out of his home by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only he can see. Frank informs his fellow classmates that the world will end in 28 days. The following morning, Donnie discovers a jet engine has crash-landed on the floor of his bedroom. From there, things only get stranger. Richard Kelly’s directorial debut is a daring, original vision, packed with jarring ideas and intelligence. Its mind-bending time travel plot is layered with themes of existentialism and spirituality, staples of Kelly’s work. The baby-faced Gyllenhaal broke through in his role as a troubled and mentally deranged individual, which has become a staple of his acting repertoire as seen in films such as Enemy and Nightcrawler. Restoration courtesy of Arrow Films and the American Genre Film Archive.
