"Unmissable! One of the best films of the year." -The Daily Mail

"A rich, stirring look at one of modern society's most enduring -- and yes, inspirational -- marriages, underpinned by political machinations that remain all too relevant." -Indiewire

Based on extraordinary true events, A UNITED KINGDOM is the story of the forbidden love of King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo, "Selma") and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl") a white woman from London, which caused an international uproar when they decided to marry in the late 1940s just as apartheid was being introduced into South Africa.

They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana.

A UNITED KINGDOM is the new film from black Bristish filmmaker Amma Asante, whose last film "Belle" was lauded by critics. Amma Asante: 'I'm here to disrupt expectations' (The Guardian).
