Advanced Contact Improv with Stephanie Ruth Roston

Class will begin with an energetic warm up, progress through the elements of weight sharing and non-verbal communication in pairs and small groups through rigorous and playful improvisation prompts, and then conclude with a short open-scored "jam" where participants will be able to practice their skills and explore connection. This class is focused on experiences of resonant physical connection and community resilience rather than a performative goal. Please be prepared to dance barefoot and refrain from wearing sharp jewelry.

Bio:
Stephanie Ruth Roston is an interdisciplinary artist from
the Midwest with roots in American modern dance, interactive theater, creative
writing, and videography. She holds a BFA in Dance Performance and
Choreography, a certificate in Urban Leadership, and an Interdisciplinary Arts
certificate and MAR in Liturgical Studies from Yale’s Institute of Sacred
Music. Roston’s passion for Contact Improvisation and Non Traditional
Partnering comes, in large part, from her experience working with Nancy Stark
Smith as an undergraduate student and her six years as a company member with
Inlet Dance Theatre in Cleveland, OH. Her mixed-media work and performance has
been featured in film festivals, graduate arts conferences, nature magazines,
and stages across North America. She is currently a freelance artist and the
editor and co-host for Cleveland, Ohio’s Simply Neighbors podcast, where she
blends her heart for storytelling with grassroots community building. Her
hobbies include crochet, saxophone, shotokan karate, cycling, and obsessing
over her orange cat, Link.
