Lixin Fan, director of Last Train Home, is back with another perspective on 21st century life in China—where youth and celebrity culture reign supreme. The focus is a hugely popular reality television show, which combines elements American Idol and Big Brother, called Super Boy. I Am Here shows the earnest dreams of a handful of young men within a rigorous, market-driven system. Lixin Fan’s critique of the show and its values is coy, sympathetically embracing ambitions fueling the machine.
