The village dramedy is a perennial staple of the Czech cinema, and here, noted actor and theater director Miroslav Krobot puts his own darkly humorous stamp on the genre. Cast mostly with performers from his prize-winning Dejvice Theater in Prague, who play in the local dialect, it centers on the lives of those who dwell in the isolated Jesenik Mountains of the former Sudetenland, a place of harsh beauty and an even harsher lifestyle. At the center of the loose action is bartender and former teacher Maruna (Tatiana Vilhelmová), young enough to be the burg’s resident hot babe but old enough to hear the ticking of her biological clock. Winner of three Czech Lions.
