Sixth generation Chinese filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai’s latest is a taut thriller haunted by the ghosts of Communism’s past. Stage veteran Lu Zhong plays Mrs Deng, an overbearing widow in her 70s who struggles to take care of her aging mother, her two sons, and her grandson. Her daily routine is disrupted when she starts receiving anonymous phone calls. The calls force her to look back upon a 40-year-old mistake made during the Cultural Revolution, one of moral compromise, which she must now face. Red Amnesia is the final chapter in Wang’s Cultural Revolution trilogy.
