It’s payday for Mónica, Violeta, and Maylin who work in a hair salon in Old Havana, and they decide to have a night out on the town. Over a period of one day and one night, we follow the three women as they share intimate details of their lives with each other with sparks of humor and sadness.
Shot independently, Venice excels with vibrant performances and inspired camerawork, capturing a unique side of Havana from a decidedly female perspective.
Director Biography
Enrique (Kiki) Álvarez was born in Havana in 1961. He has a degree in Art History, Communication Theory and Screenwriting. He is currently head of the fiction film program at the International Film and Television School EICTV. He has directed internationally acclaimed video-art, short and feature-length films, among them
La Ola and
Jirafas (
Giraffes).
Venecia, his latest feature, is the first Cuban film produced through crowdfunding.
Director's Statement
Venice is a journey, a reality trip to document the experience of three actresses-characters, within a dramatic and emotional situation in which each of them will have to face the vicissitudes of life.
The premise, in terms of artistic research, was to shoot based on a step outline. Both working conditions and the production design helped stimulate group creativity as well as narrative development while shooting took place.
Centered on improvisations, Venecia’s directing proposal was to develop each character based on the actresses own experiential energy; providing them with a dramatic context while focusing on mis-en-scene as the creative locus of screenwriting.
A more interactive directing strategy which thrives on the energy of everyone in the cast & crew and builds on the dialogue with all creative links. On the credits people will read that it is a film by Kiki Álvarez. The truth is that the film is by all of us, who worked to make it happen.
