Tale of Tales
35th MSPIFF OFFICIAL SELECTION
Matteo Garrone’s surreal, star-studded fairy tale is a unique and rapturous cinematic ride. Loosely interpreted from the celebrated tales of 16th century Neapolitan poet and scholar Giambattista Basile, Garrone overlaps the bizarre stories of three neighboring kingdoms-the first of a king and queen (John C. Reilly and Salma Hayek) who must slay and steal the heart of a lake monster in order to have a child; the second ruled by a fornicating libertine (Vincent Cassel) who becomes obsessed with the singing voice; and lastly, King of Altomonte who nurtures a flea into a giant monstrous pet.
