Two neighbors, a woman and a man, discover their respective spouses are having an affair. They find comfort in each other’s company, but crowded Hong Kong has no room for secrets.

Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring flats on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite – until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. (Hong Kong, 2001, 98 min., Cantonese Chinese with English subtitles, PG-13, DCP | Dir. Wong Kar-wai)

This personal favorite is rife with lush leitmotifs: deep emotive hues, dancing shadows, obvious secrets, and things deliberately unseen. The soundtrack is unforgettable, and I’ve been nearly conditioned to feel overwhelming longing with the haunting plucking of Yumeji’s theme. In the Mood for Love was made for the big screen, for an experience to fill you with nostalgia. You will fall in the mood for love, “simply because you’re near me…” – Catherine Kim
