Description

<< Return to All Films | Sinopsis en Español

Fearlessly using his own grim cancer diagnosis as a starting point, legendary Colombian filmmaker and writer Luis Ospina weaves a touching, impassioned recounting of his time with the Grupo de Cali, a close network of fervent young cinephiles who came together in the early 70s and ended up leaving an indelible mark on Colombian film history.

Playfully mixing interviews, archival footage, as well as a poignant dinner party sequence that introduces key figures throughout, IT ALL STARTED AT THE END is a warts & all tour de force, exploring the larger-than-life personalities and social conditions that provided fertile ground for this revolutionary filmic movement. From the dynamic young film theorists who challenged the dogmas of Third Cinema in the 70s to the careers of Carlos Mayolo, whose notorious debut feature CARNE DE TU CARNE shocked audiences throughout Latin America; and the tragic Andrés Caicedo, whose acclaimed novel ¡QUE VIVA LA MUSICA! was released on the day of his suicide at the age of 25, Ospina approaches the lives of his beloved colleagues and conspirators with a warmth and reverence that, in true “Caliwood” fashion, transcends the bounds, and extends the language, of the classic documentary form. From the strident 70s to the coke-filled 80s and the 90s arthouse successes, IT ALL STARTED AT THE END is a work that succeeds both as an epic work of art and an intimate, heartfelt meditation on life, death and love.
