Taking their sweet time getting home from morning soccer practice before facing the reality of a friend’s funeral that evening, best friends Lucas (Fabrizio Santini), Emilio (Paco Rueda), and Ruben (Alejandro Guerrero) spend their afternoon as any group of girl-obsessed, middle-class adolescent boys would: talking smack, dishing it out and engaging in an endless game of one-upsmanship in the funniest, most dude ways imaginable. But when Lucas’s keys go missing after an impulsive dive into a pile of leaves at a local park, the trio set out to recover the missing set, leading to an unpredictable afternoon that will quietly challenge the boy in each of the not-quite-men, as well the sometimes tenuous bonds of their own friendship, in this sharp, bittersweet coming of age comedy.
With beautifully crafted characters whose outwardly simple presentations mask complex inner lives, director Alejandro Iglesias Mendizabal and co-screenwriter/DP Luis Montalvo have crafted a wise, knowing paean to the twilight of childhood and the uncertainties of what comes next. Whether its Lucas’s straining against his girlfriend’s short leash, Emilio’s obsession with a sexy neighbor or the secret Ruben has been hiding from his concerned parents, LEAF BLOWER rings true in its eye for the vagaries of adolescence and is alive with humor, compassion and youthful energy.
