Sharing her ailing grandfather Ramon’s deep love of their family’s once-thriving olive groves, now reduced to an industrial chicken operation, headstrong Alma (a tremendous Anna Castillo) understands all too well the cause for her yayo’s crippling sadness: the selling of a beloved and ancient olive tree where the pair had spent countless hours together throughout her childhood. Fiercely determined to save her grandfather’s life yet unable to convince her stubborn father Luis (Miguel Angel Aladren) to act, Alma tracks down the tree’s new owner, a controversial German conglomerate where its image serves as a cynical marketing ploy. Creating an outlandish ruse to get the tree back, Alma quickly finds herself in over her head, trapped by her well-meaning fabrications and facing hard consequences for thinking with her heart first. With her kind yet hotheaded Uncle Arti (Javier Gutierrez) and sympathetic friend Rafa (Pep Ambros) in tow, Alma soon discovers that the seeds of love sometimes bear fruit in the most unexpected ways.
More than just a moving tale of the bonds of land and family, acclaimed writer/director Iciar Bollain (Even the Rain, Kathmandu Lullaby), along with co-writer Paul Laverty, have crafted a smart, lively tale that confronts the economic pressures chipping away at Spain’s middle class with humor and insight. Rooted by an unforgettable performance by Anna Castillo, The Olive Tree touches both the heart and the conscience alike.
