Julie Dash’s 1991 masterpiece was the first American feature directed by an African American woman to receive a general theatrical release. A languid, dreamy, and elegant meditation on the Gullah people of South Carolina and Georgia’s Sea Islands, Daughters of the Dust effortlessly shifts between the present, past and future to tell the story of a multi-generational Gullah family – former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions – as they struggle to maintain their cultural heritage while contemplating a migration to the mainland.
