Neruda
Neruda | 107mins | Spanish with English Subtitles
Pablo Neruda (Gnecco) speaks out against the government. In some countries, this would be par for the course, but in 1948 Chile, where Neruda is Communist and the country decidedly isn't, it means Neruda has to go on the run. On his heels is inspector Peluchonneau (Bernal), who fancies himself a greater detective than he is and has delusions of grandeur.
Based on a true story means fiction, but fiction is sometimes more informative than the facts. Facts have been changed to protect the innocent, and in some cases, reality itself. The film asks us to decide what matters more - the man, Neruda, or the man's work, and to what extent are they one and the same.
Part Catch Me If You Can, part poetry, Neruda is a film you can't justify not seeing.
