We first meet Lianqing mid-journey on a well-established route for illegal immigrants from Myanmar to Thailand—across the Mekong River and along a labyrinth of police bribes and facilitated passages. Looking for a better life in Bangkok and hopefully beyond, Liang must first navigate the risks of exploitation in finding work without proper identity papers. Along the way she meets Guo, a kind young man in the same situation. As their relationship blossoms so do their disagreements regarding their future, adding a palpable frustration to their physical and financial hardships. Tackling a universal story with knowing specificity, filmmaker Midi Z, himself a Burmese transplant working in Taiwan, underscores the harrowing emotional and physical toll of the immigrant experience with unforgettable social realism.
