Romania’s official submission to the 89th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
From Cristi Puiu, the acclaimed director of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, comes Sieranevada, a complicated comedy that takes place almost entirely in a Bucharest apartment.
Three days after the terrorist attack on the offices of Parisian weekly Charlie Hebdo and 40 days after the death of his father, Lary, a doctor in his forties is about to spend Saturday at a family gathering to commemorate Emil, the patriarch of the family. Crammed inside this tiny apartment, depressed and anxious from world and personal events, are gathered Lary’s wife, the widow Nusa, and Lary’s brother, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles, in-laws, children of various ages, and a drunk friend… all waiting for a priest to bless the whole affair.
