Description

In what appears to be good use of an old garage, Lord’s Gym in Austin, Texas is a gathering place for people of all ages, shapes, and sizes to get a workout in the boxing ring. In Boxing Gym, Frederick Wiseman’s profound preoccupations come to the fore: the vulnerability and beauty of people pushing themselves, how dance draws out our better selves (even if the dance here is in service to the sweet science of pugilism), and how people are affected by a dedicated teacher. Boxing Gym is a meditation not only on the sport, but, as usual for Wiseman, on the joy of human interaction and growth. “A riveting and unexpectedly inspiring essay on the peace that comes from shared physical and mental concentration.” — Entertainment Weekly
