Following two groups of Green Berets who were the very first to land in Afghanistan following 9/11, Greg Barker’s Legion of Brothers is a nuanced and moving portrait of the men whose initial successes were forgotten by the vast series of mistakes in the months that followed. Arriving just over a month after the attacks, Captain Mark Nutsch’s Team 595 joined forces with anti-Taliban military and captured the regional capital of Mazar-e-Sharif. Shortly thereafter they pushed on, along with Captain Jason Amerine’s Team 574 and future Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s soldiers, and took Kandahar. At first enormously successful, they soon came under intense friendly fire, and then watched as their efforts were swallowed up by America’s utter mishandling of the war in the many years that followed.
“[I]ts up-close portrait of heroic dedication in extreme situations has the dramatic immediacy and air of privileged access to impress both hawks and doves.” — Variety
