In Person: Filmmaker Ana Cristina Barragán
Ana Cristina Barragán's lovely saga about an 11 year old who must suddenly move in with her eccentric father, who she barely knows, is a mesmerizing example of the exciting new movies
emerging from Ecuador.
When her bedridden single mother (Amaia Merino) is hospitalized, Alba (Macarena Arias), a shy, lonely 11 year old, is sent to live with Igor (Pablo Aguirre Andrade), the father she hardly knows. An eccentric, solitary figure, Igor lives in complete isolation in a run-down apartment, though an old photo Alba comes across reveals that he was once a radiant, happy young man. Few words are exchanged between father and daughter, yet the two slowly get to know one another. Ana Cristina Barragán's sensitive, award-winning feature debut has brought much excitement to Ecuadorian cinema. (Ecuador/Mexico/Greece, 2016, 89 min., Spanish with English subtitles | Dir. Ana Cristina Barragán)
