In this program, we will relive these moments in music history that gave birth to the music videos of today by viewing some of these Scopitone films and other promotional films from the era. Some of the wide range of performers that will be featured will include Bobby Vee, Procol Harum, Tommy James, The 1910 Fruitgum Co., Shocking Blue, Lou Christie, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Roy Orbison, and many more. Join us for a trippy, loopy, time-warp trip back to the ‘50s and ‘60s.
The Scopitone Video Jukebox existed in the 1930’s and 1940’s but became more popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s with the advent of Rock and Roll. Despite its name using the word “video,” this jukebox projected 16 mm films onto a small screen attached to the cabinet. Many famous (and not so famous) bands made their pre-MTV promotional musical films that played in bars, hotels, and bowling alleys. Groups like Tommy James and the Shondells, The Moody Blues, and Sonny and Cher lip-synched their way across America in these jukeboxes. Even Europe joined this craze to promote their performers.
