Digitally restored after 25 years, Delicatessen is still an irresistible black comedy, and a quirky love story between a former clown and shy violinist, and survival set in a dystopian landscape.

In a 25th anniversary digital restoration, this first feature by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, future director of enduring classic Amélie, is one of the most distinctive debuts in the history of cinema. Unemployed circus clown Louison (Dominique Pinon) applies for a job as a handyman at an apartment building in post-apocalyptic France, unaware that the ad is meant to lure people to slaughter. The butcher/landlord Clapet (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) provides human meat for his tenants. When Louison and Julie (Maire-Laure Dougnac), the butcher's daughter, fall in love, it takes all their wits to escape the knife. (France, 1991, 97min., French with English subtitles, R, DCP | Dir. Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
