This Halloween edition of Anything But Silent pairs the 1910 original short Frankenstein, with The Penalty, in which a deformed criminal mastermind plans to loot San Francisco and plots revenge on the doctor who amputated his legs.

From Gouverneur Morris’ novel. When Buzzard (Lon Chaney) was a boy, his legs were amputated by an incompetent doctor. Now an adult, he resolves to become kingpin of the underworld and have another’s legs grafted onto his. But an operation converts his evil mind, and agent Rose (Ethel Grey Terry) who has been monitoring Buzzard takes notice. Buzzard's old associates, however, aren't so thrilled. (USA, 1920, 90 min., NR, English | Dir.  Wallace Worsley Sr.)

The first motion picture adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but in this interpretation, the Monster is created because of Dr. Frankenstein’s sinister intentions, but the monster instead lets good overcome him. (USA, 1910, 16 min., NR, English | Dir.  J. Searle Dawley)

Ben Model  is one of America’s leading silent film accompanists, and has been playing piano and organ for silent films at the New York MoMA since 1984, and the CAC since 2006.
