Description

Please join us for the Friday, February 2, 7:00 screening of Django, hosted by KBEM's "String Theory" host Kevin Barnes, part of the Jazz88 Reel Jazz Film Series.

1943, occupied Paris. Django Reinhardt is at the pinnacle of his art. The brilliant and carefree jazz guitarist, king of ethereal swing, plays to standing-room-only crowds in the capital’s greatest venues. However, his life takes a turn for the worse when the Nazi propaganda machine wants to send him on tour in Germany...

Reinhardt, elegantly interpreted by Reda Kateb (A Prophet, Zero Dark Thirty), is the toast of 1943 Paris, thrilling audiences with his distinctive brand of “hot jazz” and charming his admirers including his muse played by Cécile de France (Hereafter, Chinese Puzzle). But even as the rise of Nazism forces Reinhardt — whose music is considered degenerate under the Third Reich — to make a daring escape from Paris, he refuses to be silenced as his music becomes a form of protest. A spirited biopic that will keep audiences on their tapping toes.

Press

"This loose, intermittently compelling biopic of jazz great Django Reinhardt offers a much-deserved spotlight role for French actor Reda Kateb." - Variety

"Even the most adamant of jazz haters will find themselves tapping their toes, a strict Nazi no-no. Time and again, the film sublimates resistance through art, through identity, and through acts of non-compliance so natural that the man committing them isn’t even fully aware that the instrument in his hands is a machine that kills fascists." - Indiewire
