When national advocacy organization ACORN became a political player and pawn during the 2008 presidential election and aftermath, it fanned the flames of animosity between Democrats and Republicans. Enter conservative activists Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe, who posed undercover as a prostitute and her pimp, to bait ACORN employees in a Baltimore regional office and secretly record conversations that were edited out of context and publicized to make it look like they were supporting tax evasion and human trafficking. After the media firestorm was over, a bright and shining organization with good intentions was extinguished and in the smoldering ashes rose a culture of dis-information and alternative facts.
