The History of the Historic Nine Mile Ranger Station Equine Program
One of the oldest and longest-running federal equine programs still operating in the U.S., this is the story of the working
horses and pack mules of the US Forest Service. Presenters from the Historic Nine Mile Ranger Station, Lolo National Forest
include Laura Johnson Boudreaux, Resources Assistant, Nine Mile Ranger Station, Lolo National Forest and Casey Burns,
Livestock Manager, Nine Mile Ranger Station.*

*When horses and mules are retired from the program, Horse Haven Montana, the parent organization for EIFF places these
senior geldings and mules in permanent adoptive homes. For those who are staying after the festival, we can work with you to
arrange a tour. The Nine Mile Ranger Station is about 40 minutes west of Missoula, easily reached by car.
