Description

Kenneth Branaugh returns to his Shakespeare roots along with Judi Dench and Ian McKellen in this "true" story of the Bard's last days.

The year is 1613, and William Shakespeare premieres his latest play, Henry VIII. It isn't his best play. And having a live cannon as a prop isn't his best idea. The cannon does, however, bring the house down. Literally. One unfortunate cannon burst, and his beloved Globe Theatre burns to the ground. Too old to rebuild, Shakespeare decides to retire to his hometown of Stratford, where he can reconnect with his wife and daughters and finally mourn his son, Hamnet.

Shakespeare can't see how everyone has gotten along just fine without him around. As his wife Anne says, he is a guest in their house. His dedication to his son alienates his daughters from him and blinds him to their wit. Eventually, even Shakespeare admits that he's lived in his imagination for so long that he doesn't always see what's right in front of him.

But he's determined, and his family members are, for the most part, willing to give him a second chance. So what starts out as retirement becomes a new beginning.
