Running almost the entire length of the nation and taking up over 80% of its land mass, the Cordillera Andes Mountains are undoubtedly Chile’s most defining landmark: massive, time-collapsing sentinels standing watch over both the villages of distant ancestors and sprawling modern cities; at once a nation’s protective mother shielding her children from invaders and a restrictive cage breeding a sense of isolation. Yet for legendary filmmaker Patricio Guzmán, the memories and emotions tied to the eternal range cannot be separated from the very human disasters they stood watch over. Returning to Chile after a thirty-year, self-imposed exile following the right-wing military coup of 1973, he finds a nation both familiar and strange yet still strongly defined by its immortal Cordillera. The final film in his acclaimed trilogy, and featuring breathtaking cinematography by DP Samuel Lahu and the essential voices of Chile’s most treasured icons, including singer Javiera Parra, writer Jorge Baradit and filmmaker Pablo Salas, The Cordillera of Dreams is the stunning, lyrical remembrance of land and a people living in the slow, crippling ache of a shared trauma, and a living poem by a master artist facing his own winter.

Extendiéndose a lo largo de casi toda la nación y constituyendo más del 80% de su territorio, la cordillera de Los Andes es sin duda la característica geográfica más destacada de Chile: la cordillera es un enorme centinela que desafía al tiempo mientras vigila desde su altura tanto las villas de ancestros distantes como las grandes ciudades modernas. Es a la vez la madre protectora que guarda a sus hijos de los invasores, así como la jaula restrictiva que genera una sensación de aislamiento. Y aún así, para el realizador Patricio Guzmán, las memorias y emociones asociadas a esta cadena eterna no puede separarse de los disastres humanos que vigila. Al regresar a Chile después de un exilio autoimpuesto de treinta años -tras el golpe de estado ejecutado por la derecha en 1973-, Guzmán encuentra una nación que es tanto familia como extraña y aún así fuertemente definida por su inmortal cordillera. Created at the CLUES Visiones Filmmaking Workshop, an intensive summer workshop that enabled participants, ages 16-19, to discover new talents and a passion for storytelling while learning skills in scriptwriting, sound recording, cinematography, lighting, and editing. The films explored topics such as identity, belonging and the immigrant experience.
