So small that it is non-existent on the Ecuadorian map, the tiny village of Plazuela is, for most, a passing blur beside a highway that leads to bigger, busier places. Boasting only twelve houses, the stunning mountain hamlet was once a lively, tight-knit locality where neighbors helped one another and kids ran free. Yet the passing years have been rough to the community, emptying it of its young people and leaving behind its only remaining residents–a colorful collection of elderly widows. From Gloria, whose chickens and guinea pigs don’t leave her enough time to be sad; and Sara, whose cat, dog and radio keep her company in a house once filled with the voices of her 10 children; to sweet natured Mariana, who can’t quite remember the exact number of grandchildren she has; and Consolacion, for whom the daily appearance of the ice cream truck provides the biggest thrill, director Verónica Haro Abril has crafted a moving and lyrical tribute to the women who raised her and who have kept alive a community, often struggling with loneliness yet maintaining a sense of purpose and dignity throughout.
Sinopsis
Tan pequeña que no existe en el mapa ecuatoriano, la pequeñísima villa de Plazuela es, antes que nada, una mancha junto a la carretera que lleva a lugares más grandes y ajetreados. Con sólo doce casas, la maravillosa aldea en la montaña algunas vez fue una localidad unida y llena de vida, donde los vecinos se ayudaban entre sí y los niños corrían en libertad. Pero el paso de los años ha sido duro para la comunidad, vaciándola de sus jóvenes y dejando atrás a los residentes restantes -una colección colorida de viudas de avanzada edad. Desde Gloria, cuyas gallinas y conejillos de indias no le dan tiempo para estar triste; y Sara, cuyos gato, perro y radio la acompañan en una casa otrora llena de las voces de sus diez hijos; hasta la dulce Mariana, quien no puede recordar con exactitud cuántos nietos tiene; y Consolación, para quien la aparición diaria de un camión de helados provee la más grande de las emociones, la directora Verónica Haro Abril ha compuesto un conmovedor tributo lírico a las mujeres que la criaron y que han mantenido con vida una comunidad frecuentente aquejada de soledad, pero que siempre mantiene un sentido de propósito y dignidad.
